Review Chapter 2 of Educational Psychology and identify the two ideas/concepts that represent the most significant new learning for you.

  1. Piaget's idea of teaching children to learn about how to learn.

    Vygotsky's idea that a person must learn from their own cultural experiences. The mental structures and processes are gained from interacting with others.
    I think that social interaction is a very important aspect in regards to intellectual and moral growth. we as humans need to know how to act towards and with others. Also in regards to Piaget, a person should try to learn about learning in a way that means something to them. To take ownership over learning is important for students in their learning development.

  2. I was very interested in the ways to classify students. I believe this is something that will help me with my students and try to figure out which levels they may be on. Also, cultural tools and there relation to cognitive development was a part that was interesting to me. These tools are impacted greatly because of culture and socioeconomic status. Some of our students will have all "tools" while some may have non or some very out dated ones.

  5. The implications of Piaget's theories for teachers is one idea that was good information. He talked about how at an early age it is important for kids incorparate information about themsleves. As a rule, students should act, manipulate, observe, and then talk or write about what they have experienced(Their Work). Also it is important as a teacher to determine what work students are bored with to decrease the chance of them not learning. There was a section on "Reaching Every Student." It made me realize that it is important as anything to make sure you know your students family identites. It is easier as a teacher to engage your students and maybe assign things they can relate to if you know them better.

  6. I think teachers can get the discussion going about the different tool people have and also teachers can use the number systems and some types of technology in the classroom to provide other tools for their students.

Significant that our district uses a second language acquisition curriculum that adresses and occupies Vygotsky and Piaget's beloved 'magic middle'; I've certainly noticed the mechanics of delivering the language through scaffolding, but I now see added value of what we call 'discovery learning', which throws kids into the zone of proximal development in minutes and forces the risk-taking needed.

  10. Risk taking in learning one or more languages is the key to development. It's somewhat easy to sit in class and repeat basic or even advanced phrases,but the real test is actually using the language in your life. There is some risk of failure involved,but after that comes success.

  11. I gained a tremendous amount of insight from the reading on Piaget's work. I believe that the section on the basic tendencies in thinking (organization, adaptation and equilibration) was the most eye-opening for me. The concept of learning in schemes was definitely new to me and quite a bit of food for thought. I think the idea that students learn by first acquiring certain schemes and then developing them into more complex and thorough schemes is an excellent way to approach teaching. Helping students link concepts is one of the core elements of good teaching. In terms of adaptation, the concept of assimilation and adaptation are, in my opinion, ingenious descriptions of the learning process. Understanding what schemes my students have already mastered and teaching them the schemes they will need to fully comprehend new concepts could exponentially increase the possibilites of what, how, and how much my students will learn. Piaget's "equilibration" ties these first two basic tendencies together and provides an excellent rubric for judging whether or not students are being understimulated or overstimulated.

  12. Since I'm wanting to be a Spanish teacher I thought the section that describe the benefits of bilingualism was interesting. It was interesting to see that benefits extend to different areas other then the language portion of learning.It was also interesting to read that it's important for a student to maintain the fluency of both languages to maintain their increased cognition.

  14. Another concept I learned quite a bit from was Vygotsky's Zone of Proximal Development. It provides a good framework for helping me structure my instruction to tailor to my students' developmental abilities. The concept of a "magic middle" is a little bit abstract but it gives me a good indicator for what to strive for in my teaching.

  15. I definitely believe that a person who can communicate in more than one language has a leg upon others who can communicate in only one language. I think that verbal communication is one of the ways that people can find common ground,no matter their ancestry or background. Communication is the key in most human relations.

  18. 1. Pragmatics... This is great to learn to help students to not to be so shy throughout the years in school. Also, this will help keep the idiots from saying stupid things at the complete wrong time. You have to be able to communicate in a social setting.

    2. Equilibration... this is according to Piaget, this is an act of searching for a balance in thinking. Organizing, assimilating, and accommodating can be viewed as a kind of complex balancing act. THis also motivates us to keep searching for a solution to help balance everything out through assimilation and accommodation.
